You’ve Got a Friend in me

It’s amazing to think you are inside a woman’s womb for 9 months, alone. And as soon as you enter this world you are dependent on those around you. To do anything: to eat, to walk, to be clean, to manage money, to smile, to live. As you grow, you tend to ease away from the family that raised you to gain independence, but still, friendships are made and you cling to those people who support you.

Family is important. But sometimes your friendships are what keep you alive. The people you meet in high school, college, work, bars, sports, etc., they become the people you go to when you’re at your lowest. And when you are at your lowest, it is amazing how just a few words can save you.

What’s also important and impactful, is when those friends are no longer there for you. Whether that is emotionally and mentally, or if they are physically farther away. It is sad. It is ok, and manageable, but it is also, simply.. sad.

I’ve never made friendships so quickly and they have never been so strong, so that saddness is there. But I am so incredibly proud when a friend of mine receives an opportunity to grow. That is what I wish for everyone: growth. An opportunity to better themselves, to better the environment, to better the world with their knowledge and ability.

And as Randy Newman perfectly states:

When the road looks rough ahead
And you’re miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you’ve got a friend in me

I’ll miss you.
